Williams Frances Smith Butler Williams, age 96, of Alterra West St. Paul, formerly of Dellwood, on April 28, 2003. Preceded in death by husbands, Laurence M. Butler and Capt. Walter Williams, U.S.N. (ret.). Survived by daughter, Deborah Butler Bancroft, husband Dick and their children, Bill (Ginny), Ann (Pam), Hunter, Carrie (Roberto) and Sarah Bancroft-Howard (Andrew); and son L. Michael Butler, Jr. and wife Lupita, as well as Mike's children, Martha, Larry (Dana), Kate Scott (Rob) and Meg (Alan), and Mike and Lupita's son, Ben. Also survived by eleven great-grandchildren. Frances was born on July 9th, 1906 in Louisville, Kentucky, the daughter of Addison R. and Cornelia Escott Smith. She attended Vassar College before marrying Larry Butler and moving to St. Paul to raise their children. After Larry's death, she married Walter Williams in 1958 only to be widowed again a year later. She found solace in cultivating her beautiful garden in Dellwood and in spending winters in her beloved Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. She was a member of the St. Paul Garden Club and The National Society of The Colonial Dames in America and had been an active volunteer for the Children's Hospital Association, the Junior League of St. Paul, the American Red Cross and was an early advisory board member of the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. She was an avid conservationist and an advocate for accessible higher education. Her family wishes to express gratitude to all the caregivers at Alterra as well as Heartland Hospice.
