Nuessle Mildred V. went peacefully home to her Father on May 5, 2002. She was born on November 12, 1923 to Arthur and Selma (Gieseke) Nuessle on a farm near Springfield, MN. Mildred was taught that being a girl was not a hindrance from reaching one's goals - it just meant working a little harder and being a little smarter. She lived her life that way. Mildred attended local public schools, Mankato Teachers College, and the University of Minnesota, where she earned a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. She first taught in one-room schoolhouses in rural Minnesota. Mildred then taught for 28 years in inner city schools in Minneapolis. Many of them at Longfellow School, where she was known as ``Henrietta Shortfellow'' for her many poems composed to celebrate events at the school. She retired in 1981. Since then, she traveled a great deal. She is survived by cousins, other relatives and many friends, who will miss her wit and wisdom. Mildred was a member of Lake Harriet United Methodist Church, the Order of the Eastern Star in New Ulm, and the Minnesota Education Association. Memorials are preferred to the Longfellow Community School Mildred Nuessle Memorial Fund or Courage Center. Memorial Service Thursday, May 16, 2002 at 3:00 PM at Lake Harriet United Methodist Church, 4901 Chowen Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55410. WERNESS BROTHERS 612-824-2624
