Baird (Whalen) Mary Elizabeth Whalen Baird, formerly of St. Paul, MN, born 4/29/47, died in Texas 5/13/03. Preceded in death by her husband, Michael, Aug. 2002; her parents, Thomas Joseph Whalen & Mary Adelaide Davey Whalen. She is survived by her brothers, Michael Joseph Whalen & wife Amy, and Thomas Joseph Whalen Jr. & wife Sarah, all of Denver; her sister, Anne Davey Whalen & husband Timothy Gagnon of Oceanside, CA. Mary has 7 nieces and nephews in Denver, CO and Carlsbad, CA, and 5 great-nieces and nephews of the same cities. Mary was the youngest granddaughter of Hanora Flynn Whalen, a survivor of the Sioux Uprising in 1862 in Minnesota. Mary's grandmother was born in Minnesota before it became a territory. Mrs. Kieran Whalen's family was saved by the Christian Indian John Other Day when he warned the family of the uprising and they escaped to New Ulm, MN. At the time of her death, she was writing her thesis for a PhD in Psychology. She was a graduate of Derham Hall and attended St. Catherine's College, both of St. Paul. When her family moved to Solana Beach, CA in 1967 she completed her undergraduate at the University of San Diego College of Women and continued in post-graduate work in special education there. Mary taught in Lemon Grove, CA, Leadville, CO, Duck Key, Lawton, and Isla Morada, FL for many years. Mary was an accomplished pianist and artist of many texture forms. She died from melanoma with complications of a stroke. She was cremated. Her husband & Mary's ashes will rest in the waters off the Coronado Islands, near her parents. Private Masses will be held in Denver and St. James in Solana Beach, CA. No flowers, please. Donations in Mary's name are suggested to St. James Catholic Church, School of Religion (C.C.D.) at 750 S. Nardo, Solana Beach, CA 92075, of which her mother was the director for 15 years.
