Shepard Gordon Shepard, St. Paul attorney and civic leader, WW II Army veteran, passed away on June 28, 2004 at age 90. Preceded in death by his parents, Samuel McMillan and Charlotte Hardenbergh Shepard, and siblings Samuel McMillan Shepard Jr. and Anne Shepard Sweeney. Gordon (a.k.a., "Boppie") is survived by his wife, Jeanne Newhall; son, John Gordon (Suzanne Brust) Shepard of St. Paul; and daughters, Sybil (John) Eakin of Bloomington, Ind., Joan Shepard of River Falls, Wis., and Charlotte (Ward) Johnson of St. Paul; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Gordon graduated from St. Paul Academy and Williams College before completing his law degree at Yale University. He joined St. Paul's Oppenheimer Law Firm in 1940 where he became an early partner. During World War II, his experience in Burma as a First Lieutenant with the Office of Special Services, where he recruited and trained Kachin tribesmen to fight behind Japanese lines, earned him a Bronze Star. Gordon practiced general family and estate law at Oppenheimer, and he represented the Metropolitan Airports Commission as the former Wold Chamberlain expanded into the current international airport. He joined the board of Neighborhood House early in his career, and remained engaged there throughout the rest of his life. He also served on the boards of the Otto Bremer Foundation and Bremer Financial Corporation from 1963 to 1991. Gordon was a trustee of the Summit School during its merger with the St. Paul Academy. As a member of the St. Paul Rotary Club, he helped form its international exchange program. Gordon also served on the boards of United Hospital, the St. Paul YMCA, and many other organizations. He will be greatly missed, though his kindness, humor, and integrity live on through the many lives he touched. A memorial service will be held at St. Peter's Church, 1405 Hwy. 13, Mendota, MN, on Friday, July 9, 10:00 AM.
