Edwin Henry Schmidt

Schmidt, Edwin Henry age 87 of Minnetonka, MN, passed away April 29, 2024 into the arms of Jesus. Survived by loving son Tom, (Michele); daughter, Kathy (Mark Rasmussen); son, Gary (Heidi); grandchildren, Haley, Jesse, Evan, Alec, Ella and Max; sister, Jeanette Lund; nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years, Shirley; parents, August and Bertha Schmidt; brothers, Frederick and Ralph; sister Marion. Edwin "Ed" is remembered for his genuine kindness and deep love for God and others. Ed was born on June 23, 1936 in Fergus Falls, MN. In his early years, he lived East of Bemidji, Minnesota. He graduated from Bemidji High School where he played football and enjoyed his classes (especially Math & Science). He attended Bemidji State University for 2 years and transferred to the University of Minnesota Twin Cities for 3 years. He was the first member of his family to attend college. He graduated in 1959 with a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering. It was at the University of Minnesota where he met his wife Shirley at a campus church. In November 1959, Ed married Shirley and settled in Minnetonka where they raised 3 children. They lived in the same home for 58 years. Ed and Shirley moved to Amira Choice Minnetonka in August 2018 where they enjoyed the final years of their lives. Ed worked for Honeywell beginning in 1959 where he was an Electrical Engineer in the Defense Division. While working full time, he earned his Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Minnesota. Honeywell eventually spun off their Defense Division which then became Alliant Techsystems. During his career, he worked hard and received many patents and advanced in management positions up to the level of Defense Group Vice President. He retired in 1995 at the age of 59. Ed enjoyed spending time with family and friends, traveling, golfing, watching sports and attending worship concerts. He had a deep love for God and His Word throughout his life. He frequently engaged in Bible studies and anchored his eternal hope and salvation on God's promises throughout Scripture. A celebration of life service will be held at Cross View Lutheran Church, 6645 McCauley Trail W., Edina on Wednesday, May 22 at 11:00am with a luncheon to follow. Public visitation will be held at Cross View at 10:00am prior to the service. Burial to follow the luncheon at Eden Prairie Cemetery, 8810 Eden Prairie Road.
