Hoffman, Avis S. age 97, passed away peacefully on March 27, 2024, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. Avis was born March 12, 1927, in Danville, Illinois, to Elmer and Evelyn Scogin. She grew up in Chicago Heights, Illinois. She wed Kenneth Hoffman in 1948 and over the years had six children. The family moved from Illinois, to Indiana, to Massachusetts, and then to Niagara Falls, NY. While in Niagara Falls, Avis and Ken opened a foster home and two of the boys became permanent members of the family. After a divorce, Avis moved to Minneapolis in 1980, a city she loved. Avis's last few years were spent living at Walker Methodist Place. She loved living there and had great care. Avis was a member of the Hennepin Avenue Methodist Church and for many years was in the choir. A graduate of Buffalo State University, she worked as an executive secretary for several years, before retiring and doing part-time work until the age of 88. Avis is survived by her children, P.J. Hoffman, Raymond Hoffman (Katsuko), Lorraine Hoffman, Vincent Hoffman, Leonard Hoffman, and foster son, Jeffrey Hopkins. She was preceded in death by daughter, Elizabeth Hoffman, and by foster son, Thomas Rhodes.
