Helling, John Fedje age 94, of Maple Grove, Minnesota, passed away January 11, 2023 at his home. He is survived by his wife, Sandra, son Erik (Valarie), daughter Lisa White (Mark), stepson Alan Troy Ashley (Catherine), eight grandchildren, and former wife, Edwina Helling. Preceded in death by his youngest son, Leif, who passed away from Progressive Multiple Sclerosis on August 13, 2022. John was born in Rochester, Minnesota, to Clifford and Gladys Helling on June 19, 1928. After graduating from Rosemount High School, he enrolled at Hamline where he graduated in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science degree. Upon graduation he was drafted into the Army and assigned to the Army Chemical Corp where he experimented with nerve gas and other dangerous chemicals for two years. After his military service, John had an interest in educational administration and set a goal to obtain a doctorate degree. He enrolled at the University of Minnesota while starting a family, working at his father's gas station in St. Paul, and teaching. In 1963, John received his Doctor of Philosophy degree. In 1967, John was employed as President of North Hennepin Community College. He stayed for twenty-three years and loved every minute of it. A celebration of life honoring John will be held February 17, 2:00 pm, at North Hennepin Community College, 7411 85th Avenue North, Brooklyn Park, MN 55445.
