Mary Elizabeth (Smith) Riley

Riley, Mary Elizabeth (Smith) age 82, longtime resident of Kenwood, Minneapolis, MN died peacefully surrounded by her family on November 13, 2022. Mary spent early childhood in Edina, then the family moved to Huntington Point on Lake Minnetonka. She graduated Cum Laude from Northrop Collegiate School in 1957 at the age of 16. Her achievements also included waterskiing for the American Waterski Association participating in the Aquatennial. In 1960 she received her Bachelor of Science in Political Science from Stanford University. She then moved to New York working in advertising. Later returning to Minneapolis living in Kenwood and raising her family. As an Entrepreneur, in 1982 she established her own business Sweet Mary's Inc., creating her infamous chocolate sauces- Sweet Mary's, and later establishing Sweet & Saucy Catering, servicing to the finest clientele of the Twin Cities. She was also well known for her Chocolate Chip Cookies, Lemon Bars, and many other sweets and fine cuisine. Mary will be fondly remembered for her brilliance and quick witted humor. She was known for her love of family and friends, hosting parties and cooking, her many dogs, creativity, love of color, determination, generosity, the Vikings, and political views. She loved long walks around Lake of the Isles, the water, beaches, skiing, biking, creative design, flowers, dining out, her porch and children. She was preceded in death by her parents, William How Smith and Mary Larkin Smith. She is survived by children, Elizabeth (Jay), Robert (Sandy), Kathleen, and Timothy (Belle). Grandchildren, Joseph, Alexis, and Behr. Brother William How Smith Jr. of San Francisco.
