Most describe gratitude as having to do with the past. Dorothy had figured out how to be grateful for everything in the present. And so, she was constantly living in an atmosphere of gratitude - even throughout the lockdowns and her fall, she was constantly amazed at the love and support she received. She lived a grateful life despite a host of tragedies. Her father died when she was only 3, her single mother was the victim of embezzlement and lost everything including their home in Yankton SD. As a young mother of two, a propane train car explosion in Mt. Pulaski Illinois destroyed her home. She lived with the constant medical uncertainty of her husband Bill's heart condition, which surfaced at age 39. He died suddenly in 1982. She never remarried. Suffering is a big part of everyone's life. But it's how you deal with it that defines your character. When things bothered Dorothy, she would reflexively exclaim, "Ufda"! That's when you knew she was really upset. I guess that's what you get when you clothe yourself in gratitude and live by it daily. Memorials in Dorothy's name may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church or the Alzheimer's Association (Minnesota-North Dakota Chapter Alzheimer's Association).
