Thomas Burnham Couling

Couling, Thomas Burnham born 03/16/ 1924 in St. Paul, MN died 09/18/21 at age 97. Son of Charles and Gladys Couling of St. Paul, MN. Tom was an Eagle Scout at age 15. After graduating from St. Paul Central HS, he attended Macalaster College for one year before enlisting in the Navy. In the Navy's Officer Training Program Tom attended Midshipmen School at Columbia University. He was commissioned at St. Patrick's Cathedral in NYC. Tom served in the Pacific during WWII. After the war Tom returned to Macalaster graduating in 1948 with a degree in Economics. In 1991, Tom retired after a 40-year career at International Paper. Tom is survived by his wife, Diane Hammond Couling, son Thomas Dewitt Couling (spouse Ardith). Tom's son, James Thomas Couling, preceded him in death. Stepsons, Paul Hammond (Suzanne), Mark Hammond, and stepgrandchildren, Charles Hammond, Katharine, and Page Hammond, Tom loved fishing, golf, and skiing. Tom's talent for hand carving birds was widely admired. Tom donated his body to the University of Minnesota Medical School Anatomy Bequest Program. A private family burial will take place at Fort Snelling at a later date.
