Bergin, Marilyn Jenny Marilyn passed away peacefully on September 14, 2021, at her son's home in Nashville, TN, surrounded by her loving family. She was 83. She was born July 7, 1938, in Minneapolis, MN, to Godfrey and Dora Bergman. Marilyn grew up in the University of Minnesota area in a big white Victorian house with red trim, surrounded by relatives. She was the adored baby of her family. She loved skating, reading, paper dolls, school, and sliding in the snow down Tower Hill at Prospect Park near her home. She dearly loved playing with her sisters, her mother's sheet cakes with crisp white frosting, and her papa's gardens. In 1948, at age 10, she was invited to read a poem she'd written on KSTP's "Riddle Griddle", Minnesota's first television program for children. Marilyn graduated from Marshall University High School in 1956. She loved going downtown to movies, and to the lakes with her friends, girls, then women, who remained friends their entire lives. She carried her love of the romantic '50s always in her heart: her favorite song was "Stardust" by Nat King Cole. Later in life she enjoyed watching all the old musicals from the '50s. In 1957 Marilyn fell in love and married Gary Bergin and they raised five children. When her youngest began school Marilyn returned to work, first in retail, and then as a medical transcriptionist after returning to college to complete her studies. She loved flowers, baking (those cinnamon rolls!), road trips across the country, Christmastime and having pie and Swedish coffee with her friends. She was a devoted mother, wife, friend, caregiver and volunteer. She had a kind and loving heart and a gentle presence. She was broad-minded and wished the best for every person on earth. She found great joy in poetry, reading, and writing. The library was her second home. For years she was the volunteer book-cart lady delivering books and reading to the children at Children's Minnesota Hospital. Marilyn's greatest joy was in being a mother and grandmother. She is survived by sons Gary (Pat Cowan) Bergin, Timothy (Lori Pilger) Bergin, Thomas Bergin, & daughter, Betsy (Michael Nott) Bergin, grandchildren Ian, Caroline, Andrew, Samara and Skyla, closest friends Carole Peck and Jan Faas, and many loving nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son David Andrew Bergin, her husband Gary Bergin, Sr., her parents and her sisters Shirley Skarsten and Lucille Bergman, and by good dogs Winky and Ole, and sweet cats Hop-A-Long, Whiskers, Prissy and Lily. All were blessed to have had her in their lives. She will be laid to rest at Hillside Cemetery in Minneapolis. Friends and family will be notified of dates and arrangements for a celebration of Marilyn's life. In lieu of flowers please consider donating to the Minnesota Humane Society.
