Keegel, Clark Thomas "Tom" Age 79, passed away on November 19th, 2020 after a courageous battle with dementia. Tom was born and raised in Minneapolis and attended Patrick Henry where he met his high school sweetheart, Patricia Nitzschke (Pat). They married in 1961 and had three daughters. Tom and Pat celebrated their 59th Wedding Anniversary this past January. Tom began his prestigious career following in the footsteps of his Father, Clarence, as a truck driver for Sterling Cartage at just 17 years old. Tom worked his way up through the ranks and in 1978 he was elected Recording Secretary and then Principal Officer and Secretary-Treasurer for Local 544. He then went on to become Principal Officer and President of Local 120 and President Emeritus of Teamsters Joint Council 32. In 1999, Tom was elected General Secretary-Treasurer of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and he held that position until he retired in 2012. Tom was awarded General Secretary-Treasurer Emeritus at the Teamster's Convention in 2011. He is the only General Secretary-Treasurer at the IBT to hold that honor and have his portrait remain forever at the International Teamster Building in Washington DC. Tom truly loved all his Teamster Brothers and Sisters. Tom was known for his tenacious work ethic, undeniable dedication to fight for the rights of all working-class families, and an outstanding ability to deliver impactful "preacher style" speeches to the members. Tom is preceded in death by his father Clarence Keegel, mother Helen Keegel (Stolsky), and brother Dennis Keegel. Tom is survived by his wife Pat, daughters Holly Keegel, Heather Keegel and Heidi Hilton (son-in-law Scott Hilton) grandchildren Haylee, Jacob, and Lauren, sister Diane Lebowski, nephew Joseph, nieces Michelle & Kristen, sister-in-law Dianne Lutz, and nephews David and Michael. Tom is beloved by many friends and relatives past and present. Our mom did an amazing, selfless job taking care of Dad. Their lifetime of love is inspirational. Our Dad taught us that hard work can make a difference in the world and this is something he most certainly did. We are so very proud of all of his accomplishments. His legacy will remain for generations to come. In retirement, Tom loved spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren who called him Papa. Tom was so very proud of their talents and accomplishments. His grandchildren had a few words to say about their Papa and what he taught them. Haylee said that Papa taught us to never forget where you came from and use it to stay grounded in everything you do. Jake said that Papa taught us about humility as he lived a humble and modest life and that nothing was ever finished because there is always work to do. Lauren said that Papa taught us that no matter how strong you are as an individual you will always have your family. At home, Tom was happy-go-lucky with a great sense of humor. He still had those amazing qualities right up until the end. Tom was known to use the phrase, "HAPPY DAYS" with his family. We will miss you so very much and we wish you an eternity of Happy Days until we can all be together again. We are so blessed that our Dad was able to stay at home with us for his final journey. Thank you to our family and friends, Tom's Teamster family, and the amazing Hospice Team for your love, kind words and selfless actions. Tom was loved and respected by so many and he will be greatly missed. He will make an amazing angel. The Family will have a Celebration of Tom's Life to be announced in the future.
