Our Peace Child died on Peace Day

Hernandez Abreu, Alexis Helen Vaubel was born September 13th, 1971 and died September 21, 2020, the 75th International Peace Day. She was an amazing, versatile dancer and musician, playing cello, Irish whistle and flute, Celtic harp, percussion, nai, accordion, and more, with many ensembles—Afro-Cuban, Arabic, Celtic, Classical. Her dance and theatre work included US-Soviet Peace Child, Ethnic Dance Theatre, and In the Heart of the Beast Theater. She was a fervent peace and social justice activist. As her cousin said, "Alexis was, even as a child, that gentle, fierce, steady musical note beating a drum for a better world." Her heart flourished in the family she created with her husband, Raudemar Ofunshi, and her three children: Akinbemi River, Oyafunke Windy, and Osumare Abeni. During her 3 1/2 year battle with cancer, she was supported by a loving community of family and friends. In addition to her immediate family she is survived by her mother Carol; aunt Jeanette, brothers Charles/Chaz (Julian), Kassian, and Frank (in soul/by choice); niece Jamaica; nephew Theo; many cousins; and her Cuban and Unangan/Aleut families. She was preceded in death by her father, Lawrence. She was a proud member of the Qawalangin Tribe of Unalaska, AK. Alexis brought joy and light to all around her; she was the muse and music of our lives. To be notified of future Celebration of Life, email kassianvaubel@gmail.com.
