Heegaard, David Barnaby age 87, of Wayzata, passed away on August 13, 2020. He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years Joanne (Parsons) Heegaard; parents William and Dorothy (Goddard) Heegaard; and brothers John (Victoria) and William (Josie). He is survived by his children whom he loved well, Laura LaBerge (Andre) of Maple Grove, Franklin Heegaard (Suzanne) of Sycamore, IL, and Deborah McMahon (Patrick) of Minneapolis; beloved grandchildren David (Hope), Tegan (Jesse), Ellyn, Ru, Lisa, Kate, Charlie, Finn, Janae, Simon, Gillian and Hope; great- grandchildren Silas, Marie and Amity all of whom brought him great joy and kept him young at heart; brothers Peter (Anne) and Roger (Marge); and many extended family members and dear friends, including the many he made during the past 7 years at the Folkestone Community in Wayzata. Dave grew up in Minneapolis, and after a brief stint out East, lived his entire life in Minnesota. He attended the Blake School ('51) and Dartmouth College ('55). He was a member of ROTC and served a short time in the army state side at the end of the Korean War. After working several years at Honeywell, the entrepreneurial bug got the best of him and he subsequently owned and operated two successful small businesses, Standard Solvents in Brooklyn Center and Automotive Paint Specialists on Lake Street in Minneapolis. Dave loved and cared for people and prioritized being "others" focused. He was an encourager and an optimist who saw difficulties in life as a glass half full. He could often be heard exclaiming, "I am highly blessed!" He also lived his life with curiosity and expansive generosity. He wanted people to feel warmly welcomed and included and was one to quickly give to those in need his family, his church, a stranger. He attended and donated to many fundraisers of all kinds, supported children through Compassion International and Imara International, Bloom childcare, and for years volunteered weekly at Interfaith Outreach and Community Partners (IOCP). After his wife passed away, he completed their dream of protecting their beautiful property in northern Minnesota by working with the Minnesota Land Trust, so its natural beauty could be enjoyed for years to come. Dave had a deep faith and hope in Jesus. At the age of 43, a childhood friend invited him to Bible Study Fellowship (BSF), where he examined his faith more fully and committed himself to a saving relationship with Jesus Christ. As a result, he was an enthusiastic attender and leader of BSF for many years. He was an active member of Messiah United Methodist Church in Plymouth, attending Bible studies and ushering regularly until his passing. He will be greatly missed and has indeed left many wonderful memories for all those who were fortunate to know him. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to IOCP at IOCP.org , Imara at imarainternational.org, or Bloom early learning at bloomearlylearning.org A private family service will be held at a later date.
