Wiese, Shirley (Mueller) With sad but grateful hearts, Shirley's family shares the news of her passing on June 11, 2020. Shirley was born on October 5, 1928 on a farm near Le Sueur, MN to E.B. and Laura Mueller. In seventh grade she met Don, the man who would be her beloved companion for over seventy five years and hold her hand on the day she died. Shirley played the saxophone In popular local bands during college, and enjoyed teaching kindergarten in the Belle Plaine and White Bear Lake school districts. She and Don then raised their family in Golden Valley, MN where she was active in the community, the Golden Valley Schools, their children's activities, and their South Tyrol Hills neighborhood. As a devoted member of Central Lutheran Church in downtown Minneapolis since 1956, she saw disparity and need in her community and worked quietly to address it. She was instrumental in starting a volunteer clothes closet, a pre-school, a crisis nursery, sponsoring a family of Vietnamese refugees, and simply being available with her time and her wheels to help where she could. At the same time, Shirley was devoted to her family. She invariably saw the best in her kids, championed (nearly) every endeavor, and to their great fortune had a very short memory when it came to their missteps. Then came another calling: Grandmother. Her love was unequivocal and her grandchildren knew it. She was babysitter extraordinaire and taught them countless lessons by her example. Shirley was blessed with many great friends, a delightful sense of humor, a curious mind, a spiritual soul, and a kind heart. But when people think of her, the word that comes most frequently to mind is "love". She was one of a kind. She is survived by her husband Donald, her children Donna Arbisi (Paul), Mike (Debi), Tom (Janine Brown), Laura Martin (Mike), those eleven precious grandchildren, and the Nguyen family. Funeral services will be at Central Lutheran with interment in Le Sueur at such time as we can all gather there.
