Gilbertson, Vernon E. of Edina, MN, formerly of Grand Forks, ND, passed away on Wednesday, August 21, 2019. Vernon was born in Michigan, ND, on January 31, 1924, to Severt Olavus and Margaret Elizabeth (Hawkins) Gilbertson. He graduated from Michigan High School. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was part of the 143rd Anti-Aircraft Artillery Gun Battalion and landed on Utah Beach in Normandy on D-Day. He was an avid fan of the Minnesota Twins, jigsaw puzzles, playing gin rummy and bingo. He was a big flirt and loved to be the center of attention. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Stanley M. Gilbertson and Clinton O. Gilbertson, a sister, June Ann Gilbertson, and a son, Richard Gilbertson. He is survived by his children, Neila K. (Gilbertson) and her husband Habib Chaouch of Bloomington, MN, Michael L. Gilbertson and his wife Diane of Bloomington, MN, Suzanne L. Lundgren of Haslet, TX, Karen A. Gilbertson of Tustin, CA, and James R. Gilbertson of Tustin, CA. He is also survived by a brother, Lyle J. Gilbertson, of Greer, SC, 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He will be loved and missed by all who knew him. Memorial service will be held on Tuesday, August 27, 2019, from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. at The Waters of Edina, 6300 Colonial Way, Edina, MN. Private burial will be in ND at a future date.
