David 'Dave' Hauck

Hauck, David "Dave" Dave, affectionately known as "Haucker," passed away at age 87 in Northfield, MN, on July 13, 2019. Born on July 26, 1931, to Mary (Lyon) and Leslie Hauck, Dave was raised in Madison, MN. Upon graduating from Madison High School, he entered Gustavus Adolphus College where he met his future wife, Mary Lundgren, of Warren, MN. Dave graduated from Gustavus in 1953 and entered the Army Medical Corps. He and Mary were married on July 10, 1954 at the First Lutheran Church in Warren. After his Army service (1953-1955), Dave began a three-year coaching tenure in Henderson, MN, followed by eight years in his hometown of Madison. During this time, he obtained his Master's degree in physical education from Bemidji State University. In 1966 Dave accepted a teaching and coaching position at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN. Over the next 45 years, he taught physical education and coached multiple sports, including gymnastics, football, softball, and golf, but it was his passion for swimming and engaging with college students where his impact is most evident. In 1973, Dave assumed the head coaching job of the men's swimming and diving program and established one of the most successful programs in the country. In the pool, his men and women won 41 conference championships and produced 21 NCAA Division III individual national champions. During his career, Dave was named College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America NCAA Division III Coach of the year three times. He was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame at both Gustavus and St. Olaf, as well as the Minnesota Swimming Hall of Fame, and was given the Distinguished Alumnus award from Gustavus. Above all, Dave was most honored to coach for and alongside his son Bob. Dave was a 53 year member of the First United Church of Christ in Northfield, MN where he played on the church softball team, served on various committees and sang as a member of the choir for 50 years. Those who knew Dave best, knew him for his love of the outdoors; hiking in the mountains of Montana, camping in his van with Mary, and working in his yard. His nicknames and crazy one-liners left a lasting impression. But most of all he was a family man; a husband, a father, and a grandfather who rarely missed an opportunity to support and cheer on his grandchildren in all of their pursuits. Left to mourn his passing are his wife of 65 years, Mary, of Northfield, his three children, Tad (Carol) of Eden Prairie, Elizabeth Fulton (Bill) of Billings, MT, and Robert (Bob) Hauck (Karna) of Northfield, as well as nine grandchildren; Jason Hauck of Austin, TX, Sara Hauck of Denver, CO, Emma Fulton of Bozeman, MT, Maria Fulton of Minneapolis, and Cullen, Tatum, Signe, Marcus and Josie Hauck of Northfield. Also surviving Dave is his brother Richard (Sherry) of Madison, MN, a nephew and several nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Donald, and a nephew. Services for Dave will take place beginning with a Celebration of Life on Saturday, July 27 from 5:00-7:30 at Skoglund Center, St. Olaf College, with an opportunity to share memories, followed by funeral services on Sunday, July 28 at 1:00 pm at Boe Memorial Chapel, St. Olaf College. If desired, memorials may be made in Dave's memory to the St. Olaf College Athletic Department or the First United Church of Christ in Northfield.
