Fr. Martin Fleming Fr. Martin Fleming Fr. Martin Fleming

Fleming, Fr. Martin Age 91, St. Paul, MN. A priest of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis and Chaplain in the U.S. Army, Fr. Fleming entered peacefully into his fullness of life at home, surrounded by loving family and friends. Preceded in death by his parents, Francis & Josephine (Foy) Fleming; sisters, Lois Bachmeier, Josephine Koenigs, Marie Fourre Russ; and brothers, Fr. John, Fr. Francis, Leo, and Thomas. Survived by his sister, Rosemary (Pat) Barry; brother, Peter (Carole), and nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Fr. Fleming grew up on St. Paul's West Side, attended St. Michael Grade School, Nazareth Hall Preparatory Seminary, the St. Paul Seminary, and ordained a priest in 1952. After a decade in Archdiocesan parish ministry, Father Fleming signed on as an Army Reserve Chaplain at Fort Snelling. He started his career as a Catholic Army Chaplain and was called to active duty during the Vietnam Buildup in 1967. In recognition of his military service he was awarded the Bronze Star and the Vietnam Service Medal. In 1984, Chaplain Fleming was promoted to the rank of Colonel, giving him more opportunities to serve his soldiers and their families. During his Army years, wherever Fr. Martin was stationed, he opened his home to brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends. He also showed up for family celebrations back home, wherever on earth he happened to be. After serving soldiers for 32 years in the United States and abroad, Father Marty retired from the U.S. Army and returned to St. Paul where he named his home Bethany Village. While living at Bethany Village, Fr. Marty took on the roles of priest, counselor, brother, uncle, community builder, gardener, real estate developer, and art connoisseur. Fr. Marty was a man of vision, occasional prankster, entertainer, team builder, and mentor. There was a picture of Christ on his wall with the saying "Recognizing Christ in the strangers guise." Marty lived that saying. In later years, Father Fleming became a promoter for those struggling with addiction. In 2011, with a partner, he founded Trinity Sober Homes, an organization that provides quality housing and Catholic faith based support to recovering addicts of all faiths. They started with one home; there are now three. Our heartfelt thank you to Father Marty's Carter Care health caregivers for the care he received from them for so many years. We are also grateful for the care received in his final days from Comfort Keepers and Our Lady of Peace in home hospice care team as well as the concerted love and care he received for 43 years from Trish Basel.
