Minnesota's largest union has endorsed Democrat Al Franken for U.S. Senate. Education Minnesota, with a membership of 70,000, said it's recommending members support Franken because he is committed to public education and is running a strong campaign. Franken was among Democratic contenders who were screened by the union's political action committee, which is made up of Education Minnesota members from around the state. "Al will be a champion for students, educators and public schools," said Education Minnesota President Tom Dooher. He said members were impressed by Franken's commitment to overhaul the federal No Child Left Behind Act and by his support of programs to help students with disabilities. The union will encourage its members to attend their precinct caucuses Feb. 5 and become a Franken delegate. PAT DOYLE
