Less than a month after accepting the top public relations job at the Metropolitan Council, Gail Plewacki decided this week that she doesn't want it.

Plewacki, communications director at Dakota County, will be staying put at her office in Hastings.

"It was a personal decision," she said.

The Met Council's $1 million public relations budget has come under fire, and legislators have weighed proposals to strip the council of some of its transportation responsibilities.

Plewacki, 57, declined to get into the specifics of her decision but praised the Met Council, saying, "That's an organization that has been around for decades. ... I wasn't afraid of the stability of the organization."

Dakota County did not offer her a raise to stay.

She said she will focus her energy on Dakota County's efforts to develop a new regional park and launch the Cedar Avenue bus rapid transit line.
