Dozens of drilling rigs dot the North Dakota landscape in the Williston Basin and the Bakken Oil Formation, and the night sky is light up by the bright, orange glow of flares burning off natural gas. Ranchers and other residents in the region are adapting to the rapid change brought on by the oil boom, which has transformed the region's once bucolic countryside into a patchwork of noisy drilling sites and dangerously heavy traffic.
