For several years while I was in high school, I lived in a small town in South Dakota with my grandma. I was homesick for the Twin Cities area, where I've lived most of my life.
I remember, back in the days when WCCO radio really was the "Good Neighbor," tuning to Steve Cannon's "Cannon Mess" in the afternoons. Even though I was more than 200 miles from home, I could hear what was happening in downtown Minneapolis. On many afternoons when I had a snow day from school and couldn't leave my grandma's house because of the large snowdrifts outside her door, I would listen to Cannon to hear how the weather was doing in Minneapolis, where the rest of my family still lived.
Cannon, who died Monday, had one of the most distinguished voices on radio. He represented a time when quality radio shows and well-liked personalities were more important than the cutthroat "business" side of radio we've seen in recent years.
