It is tragic that Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany and his staff are not being open-minded about changing the name of the newly expanded conference. I believe they should give fans the chance to give their views on a name change. When the name "Big Ten" was chosen, the people in charge of the conference did not anticipate having a problem with athletic conference names that contain a number. As far as Delany's complaint that the name of the Big Ten Network would have to be changed: That's a trivial issue. Recall that years ago, what is now known as Fox Sports North was called the Midwest Sports Channel, and the name change did not affect viewership. The Big Ten could hold a contest on its website, giving people a chance to either vote to keep the current name or suggest an alternative that others can vote on. Delany should not give fans of Big Ten athletics the silent treatment. DAN WICHT, FRIDLEY
