The basics: At this southeastern Utah park, more than 2,000 arches, windows, pinnacles, spires and other unusually shaped red rocks make up the scenery. Its high elevation — 4,000 to 5,600 feet above sea level — makes for cool winters. Still, summer days can reach well above 100 degrees. Despite the harsh conditions, 483 species of plants, 186 species of birds and 52 species of mammals are found in the park.

Visitors: 1.399 million people visited the park in 2015.

Square miles: 119.

Established: 1971; the park had been a national monument since 1929.
