There will be a lot more shimmying and cha-cha-ing at the Ordway Center in the next few years.
The St. Paul multi-arts venue announced Thursday that it had received a $670,000 Bush Foundation grant to expand its diverse world music and dance programming.
The news, which comes as some arts organizations nationwide are paring back staff and programs, is a big boost for the Ordway.
"Beyond the money, which is particularly wonderful just now, is the fact that it gives us time to solidify the programming," said Ordway president and CEO Patricia Mitchell. "We get to develop the audience for this with a little financial cover."
In addition to the classical and operatic offerings from its four resident arts organizations, the Ordway books Broadway-style musicals and dramas.
The grant, which will be spread out over three years and includes a matching component, allows the Ordway to broaden music and dance offerings that it has had on its roster for years. Those earlier efforts were built around the Ordway's education initiatives and backed by corporate sponsors.
This weekend, the Ordway hosts a program by Ballet Hispanico. The New York-based company will do workshops and dance lessons Saturday and perform Sunday. The Ordway also has upcoming performances by Lula Washington Dance Theatre, African singer/songwriter Vusi Mahlasela and Hawaiian ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro.
"When these companies come to town, they should be here for longer, so that they can go deeper into the community," Mitchell said. "It allows for a deeper artistic and community exchange."
