A boy was fatally injured Friday night when he was struck by a car in Minneapolis, police said.

Police responded to a report that a pedestrian had been hit by a vehicle in the 2500 block of 17th Avenue S. just after 8:30 p.m.

According to a police news release, a van dropping off the juvenile male victim was parked next to the curb facing north on 17th Avenue S. The child got out of the van, walked behind the vehicle, then out into the street, where he was hit by a Chrysler sedan traveling north on 17th Avenue S.

When officers arrived, passersby were providing medical care to the victim, who was then taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he died.

The Hennepin County medical examiner will release the victim's identity after an autopsy.

The man driving the Chrysler is coopering with investigators, police said.
