Andover scored early and often to upset top seed Grand Rapids 56-12 in a Class 5A, Section 7 semifinal game at Grand Rapids High School on Saturday.
Carsen Syke help the 4-6 Huskies take a 22-0 lead after one quarter with a pair of touchdowns. He added a third touchdown in the third quarter and had 59 rushing yards in the game.
The Thunderhawks (6-3) scored early in the second quarter on a short touchdown run by Gavin Kuschel, but the Huskies quickly responded. Gavyn Walsh found Jacob Paul for a 42-yard touchdown pass on the ensuing drive.
The Huskies continued building their lead with two more touchdowns to finish the first half. Brandon Dietz scored his second touchdown run of the game and Walsh tossed his second touchdown pass, this time to Adam Perrin.
Syke and Dietz scored their third touchdowns of the game in the third quarter to give the Huskies their largest lead of the game at 56-6.
Class 5A
Apple Valley 28, Hastings 21 (Section 3): Mario Lewis and Noah Sanders scored two rushing touchdowns apiece to lead the top-seeded Eagles past the Raiders.
SMB 28, St. Paul Central 7 (Section 4): The Wolfpack used a stifling defensive effort to grind out a victory over the Minutemen. Siegel Howard ran for two touchdowns and caught another for the Wolfpack, which made a pair of second-half interceptions to seal the victory.
Mahtomedi 48, Minneapolis Washburn 7 (Section 4): Jalen Frye scored four touchdowns to lead the Zephyrs past the Millers. T.J. Tumbleson had two touchdown runs for the Zephyrs.
Spring Lake Park 35, St. Louis Park 14 (Section 5): Cade McMahon ran for 108 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Panthers past the Orioles. Zach Ojile threw for a touchdown and ran for 133 yards for the Panthers.
St. Michael-Albertville 31, St. Cloud Tech 7 (Section 6): Mitchell Kartes ran for 125 yards and a touchdown and intercepted two passes to lead the Knights past the Tigers.
St. Francis 24, Chisago Lakes 0 (Section 7): The Saints jumped out to a 14-0 lead after one quarter and held on for the shutout.
Class 4A
Hutchinson 40, Waseca 19 (Section 2): Travis Trettin did it all for the Tigers in their win over the Bluejays. Trettin scored two touchdowns, made all four of his extra-point tries and led the team on defense. Brooks Telecky ran for two touchdowns for the Tigers. Jacob Mraz got the Tigers on the board with a 13-yard interception return early in the first quarter.
New Life Academy 26, Hill-Murray 15 (Section 3): Adam Busch ran for two touchdowns and threw for another to lead the Eagles past the Pioneers.
South St. Paul 31, Simley 7 (Section 3): Ryan Duffy ran for 117 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Packers past the Spartans. Duffy also threw a 39-yard touchdown to Miles Williams.
Fridley 28, DeLaSalle 18 (Section 4): The Tigers took an early 21-0 lead and held off the Islanders for the victory. Prince Okolie ran for 270 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Tigers. Noah Couwenhoven threw for two touchdowns and Caleb Brandt had 111 receiving yards and a touchdown for the Tigers.
Holy Angels 35, Mound Westonka 24 (Section 5): The fourth-seeded Stars scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to upset the top-seeded White Hawks. Brennen Boroughs threw a touchdown pass to Zach Bohn, and Isaiah Cherrier had a 60-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown for the White Hawks.
St. Paul Highland Park 35, Columbia Heights 23 (Section 4): Amitri Collins-Westlund and Antonio Ortiz ran for two touchdowns each to lead the Scots past the Hylanders. Dontae Hayley threw two touchdown passes to lead the Hylanders.
Class 3A
Jordan 21, Providence Academy 7 (Section 2): The Hubmen's Zach Kes accounted for two first-half touchdowns, and Jack Friedges added a 44-yard touchdown run in the third quarter in an upset win over the top-seeded Lions.
Class 1A
Wabasso 30, Minneota 20 (Section 5): The Rabbits (9-1) handed the Vikings (9-1) their first loss since the 2013 Prep Bowl. Nick Altermatt converted a third down into a long touchdown run to seal the victory in the final minute.
