A 17-year-old boy is under arrest and accused of fatally shooting a 22-year-old man over the weekend in Duluth, marking the city's first homicide of the year.

Police said the gunfire occurred about 7:10 p.m. Saturday downtown in the 100 block of E. 3rd Street.

Authorities have not said what led to the shooting, and they are asking for the public's help in the investigation. Anyone with information is urged to call 911 or 218-730-5050, which connects to the Police Department's violent crimes unit.

The identities of the victim and the suspect have not been released. Police did say both are from Duluth.

Police Chief Mike Tusken declined late Monday afternoon to say more about the killing, explaining in a statement that "providing any additional information at this time could impede the investigation, and the results that could come from it."

Tusken added in connection with the city's 14th shooting this year, "This is an example of guns being in the hands of people who are using guns to solve conflict instead of alternative nonviolent methods."

The chief said police have increased their presence downtown since the shooting.

Duluth's first homicide last year occurred on Sept. 6, when 3-year-old Cameron Gordon was killed in his Lakeside neighborhood home. Jordan W. Carter, 31, who was the fiancé of the boy's mother, was charged with second-degree murder. Carter claimed at the time that the boy's traumatic head injuries were the result of a fall.
