Adding to the homecoming week festivities, the Gophers men's and women's basketball teams will host a joint open scrimmage for fans Saturday afternoon at Williams Arena.

The free event called "Homecoming Tip-off" begins 20 minutes after the conclusion of the Gophers football game against Rutgers, scheduled for an 11 a.m. start at TCF Bank Stadium.

Doors will open just before the end of the fourth quarter.

Both teams will scrimmage separately, followed by an hourlong autograph session with players and coaches at the Sports Pavilion.

U volleyball rallies

Trailing 2-1 in sets, the No. 3 Gophers rallied to beat Iowa 21-25, 25-20, 20-25, 25-13, 15-11 in a Big Ten volleyball match in Iowa City. Sarah Wilhite had 22 kills and Alexis Hart 19 for Minnesota (15-3, 7-2 conference).

The Gophers outhit the Hawkeyes .336 to .323. Iowa fell to 15-6, 5-4.

11 into 'M' Hall

Eleven new members were inducted into the University of Minnesota's "M" Club Hall of Fame on Thursday night at TCF Bank Stadium.

The list: men — Greg Eslinger and Jeff Wright, football; Dave Gumlia, golf; Tim Harrer, hockey; Howard Nathe, baseball; Pat Neu and Jared Lawrence, wrestling; Al Nuness, basketball; and Clay Strother, gymnastics; women — Amber Hegland, hockey, softball; MaryAnne Kelley, gymnastics.

This year's class of inductees featured athletes from 10 different sports and six different decades.

Longtime equipment manager Dick Mattson was awarded the Distinguished Service Award for his 48 years working for Gophers athletics and Dick Jonckowski an honorary letter for his three-decade career as a public address announcer, primarily for Gophers men's basketball and baseball.

• The Gophers wrestling team will hold an open practice at 11 a.m. Oct. 29 at the Bierman Field Athletic Building. The Saturday morning practice session will include typical warm-ups and drills plus more live action than usual. Head coach Brandon Eggum also will offer his outlook to fans on the upcoming season and answer questions.

• Sophomore Molly Eastman of the Gophers ran a career-best 21 minutes, 32.6 seconds to finish first among women in the 6K Jack's Twilight Run at the Les Bolstad Course.

• Matic Spec of the Gophers advanced to the round of 16 at the ITA Central Region Tennis Championships in Stillwater, Okla.
