See more of the story

Hide the goods: Don't be obvious about where your valuables are being kept. Our biggest mistake was stowing bags in the trunk of a parked car, then leaving it where it sat.

Wear your passport: Those string bags you can wear around your neck will mark you as an ugly tourist, but it's a small price to pay.

Separate the important stuff: Keep your passport, phone and wallet separate. You can't prevent theft entirely, but you can make sure everything isn't taken.

Stay calm: If you are robbed, laugh it off. People who work in destinations where theft is common are tired of your story. If you want them to respect you, don't get upset.

Be aware: When you're in the midst of heartbreak, consider traveling to see friends who will take care of you. Hold the complex overseas adventures until your head's in the game.
