Minneapolis-born pianist Kenny Broberg, 24, won a silver medal last year at the highly prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in Texas. His recital at Winona's Minnesota Beethoven Festival pairs sonatas by Beethoven, Medtner and Samuel Barber with Bach's Toccata in C minor. Folk solos
The Cantus vocal octet group experimented with a new "chamber series" last summer, giving the ensemble's highly gifted singers more opportunities to sing solos. That successful format gets a repeat with "Songs My Mother Taught Me," a concert examining the influence of folk songs on classical composers. Aaron Copland's wonderful cycle of "Old American Songs" is the program's main work. Also featured is the Dvořák song referenced by the concert's title. Bernstein birthday
Plymouth Congregational Church marks the 100th birthday of Leonard Bernstein with a recital of free music. Singers Maria Jette, Lisa Drew, Vern Sutton and James Bohn traverse the best of Bernstein's vocal music, with Sonja Thompson at the piano. Cello champs
The CELLOici recital series is curated by faculty at the International Cello Institute summer school at St. Olaf College. African overture
Soon Minnesota Orchestra members will pack their instrument cases and embark on a five-city tour of South Africa, joining worldwide celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of Nelson Mandela's birth. But first comes the International Day of Music, a grand overture to the orchestra's journey. Set in and around Orchestra Hall, the Day of Music features a packed schedule of free performances with an emphasis on African music and musicians.
