Lyman D. Coombs

Coombs, Lyman D. age 86, of Apple Valley, passed away August 26, 2015. Preceded in death by his parents, Paul & Sarah Coombs; in-laws, John & Alys Erdman; brother, Wendell, and granddaughter, Nicole Marie. Survived by wife, Joann of Apple Valley; son, Douglas (Sue) of Maplewood; daughter, Laura (Steve) Look of Pinole, CA; granddaughter, Kari Coombs of Maplewood; great-granddaughter, Payton Lynn Coombs; & great-grandson, Carter Douglas Coombs of Maplewood. Lyman grew up in South Dakota. He served in the infantry in 1946-1947 for 15 months in Tokyo, Japan, then returned to school, Northern State College in Aberdeen, SD. He graduated from the University of Minnesota, earning a B.A. in Liberal Arts and Master's degree in political science. He graduated Cum Laude and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He worked summers in Glacier Park. In 1952 he worked at the Black Hills Ordinance Depot in Igloo, SD. In 1953 he began work at the Toni Company (later a division of The Gillette Co) in St. Paul. He was Personnel Assistant, Purchasing Assistant, Packaging Engineer, also working in Chicago as Production Liaison from 1966 to 1968. When he returned to Minnesota, he was Director of Planning and Service, then was promoted to Operations Manager in 1973. In 1974 he transferred to Andover, MA, to work as Administrative Assistant to the VP of Manufacturing, later becoming Manager of Distribution Operations. While in Shoreview and Maplewood, MN, he served as chairman on both of their Planning and Zoning Commissions. Lyman belonged to Como Golf Club for several years, then Dellwood. He won tournaments in St. Paul, Osakis, and Mankato, and was a semi-finalist at Alexandria. He won the Gillette President's Trophy for golf for 3 years. During the 1960s he averaged a 4 handicap. He had 2 holes in 1. In Massachusetts he played at Andover and Indian Ridge courses. He started running and played racquet-ball, bicycled, and did mountain hiking in New Hampshire mountains, including a dozen over 1100 ft. in 1983. He served as VP in charge Of Program for the New England Roundtable of the Natl. Council of Physical Distribution Mgt., then later served as president. When Lyman retired in 1984, he bought two convenience stores, one in Inver Grove Hts., and one on the east side of St. Paul. He later owned another on the east side, two in downtown St. Paul, and one in Mahtomedi, managing one himself, and his son managed the other four. Funeral service will be held 1:00 pm on Thursday, September 3, 2015 at the White Funeral Home, 14560 Pennock Ave., Apple Valley, visitation from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm.
