Clarke Alexander Chambers

Chambers, Clarke Alexander of St. Paul June 3, 1921-July 28, 2015. Born to Winslow and Anna Chambers of Blue Earth, MN. Graduated with honors from Carleton College in 1943, married Florence Wood in 1944, and entered the US Army Air Force serving in the South Pacific. PhD in History from UC-Berkeley (1950), and had a fulfilling and productive career at the University of Minnesota (1951-1990), where he was Professor of History and Adjunct Professor of Social Work. Established the Social Welfare History Archives in 1965, and served as Chair of the History Department (1971-1976). In addition to being an eminent scholar, he was a popular teacher and mentor. He encouraged and supported women students and women colleagues to advance when there were few women in the academy All who knew him remember the sparkle in his eyes, and his ease at quickly forming a deep rapport. Chaired the Minnesota Humanities Commission (1978-1980), and helped to establish the Elder Learning Institute (now OLLI). With Florence raised four children, read and wrote poetry, loved to travel, and after retirement spent time at their cabin on the Kinni River. Was preceded in death by wife Florence, half-brother Winston, sister Jean, daughter Katy, and is survived by children Jenny Willow (Michael Gallagher), Robert Wood Chambers, Sarah C. Chambers (Eugene Ozasky); grandchildren Sunny, Daisy, Dan, Sally, Alex, and Easton; and great grandchildren Lola, Anna Marie, Clarke, and Parker. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to either: Clarke Chambers Fellowship Fund #2997 (University of Minnesota Foundation, 200 Oak St. SE, Suite 500, Minneapolis, MN 55455) or to the Kinnickinnic River Land Trust (PO Box 87, River Falls, WI 54022).
