Stuart V. Immer

Immer, Stuart V. 78, of Zimmerman, formerly of Jeffers, died May 19, 2015, at his home in Zimmerman. Stuart Vern Immer was born Sept. 8, 1936, to Vern and Myrtle Immer in Windom. He graduated from Jeffers High School in 1954 and attended South Dakota State University for two years before transferring to the University of Minnesota. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1958 with a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture. He was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho, Lambda Chapter. From 1959 to 1970, Immer worked as a county extension agent. In 1963, he became an advisor for Standard Oil Farm Center in Albert Lea, working for Standard Oil nearly seven years, including a year (1969-70) as the company's regional agri-chemical merchandise manager in Kansas City, Mo. After the sudden death of his father, he returned to take over the family farm in Jeffers in 1970. Stuart raised farrow-to-finish hogs and grew corn and soybeans. He also served on many boards and held multiple offices including Minnesota State Soybean Growers and Cottonwood County Soybean Growers. He also worked as a Jeffers tax assessor for 40 years, served on the Storden-Jeffers school board and was a member of the Jeffers Masonic Lodge. In 2000, the 710-acre Immer family farm was designated as a Century Farm for its 100 years of continued family ownership. Stuart retired from full-time farming in 2003, but continued to rent his farm land in Cottonwood County until the time of his death. In retirement, Stuart explored his second love: travel. He went to Germany twice to explore his family's heritage and also traveled to Italy and Tahiti. He also drove in all 50 U.S. states and seven Canadian provinces. For the past 12 years, Stuart served as secretary for Alpha Gamma Rho, Lambda Chapter's alumni board of directors. Stuart was a member of American Lutheran Church of Windom and Zion Church of Crown near Zimmerman. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Shirley Glasser and Sharon Immer; and his brother, Curtis Immer. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Olene; sister, Gwen (Jack) Sundstrom; daughters, Susan (Owen) deCathelineau, Nancy (Patrick) Saunders and Julie Immer; son, Michael (Shannon) Immer; and Joyce's daughter, Sandra (James) Barthel. He has three grand-daughters: Jessica, Rebecca and Breanna Immer and grandson Cole deCathelineau. He is also survived by the mother of his children, Lois Stenger. A memorial will be held on Thursday, May 28, at the Elk River Lutheran Church on Main Street (http:// elkriverlutheran.org). There will be a gathering and visitation hour beginning at 10 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. and lunch at noon.
