Gossman, Martha Jane (nee Dawson) age 91, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2015. Preceded in death by loving husband of 61 years Norbert Gossman and infant son Mark. Survived by children, Susan, Chris, Patricia (Joost) and Mary Beth (Therese); grandchil- dren, Anastasia, Roy, Arent, Phoebe and Aidan. Martha was born on a farm near Sigourney, Iowa. She served in the US Naval Reserve WAVES in WWII stationed in Houston, TX. After the war, she obtained her B.A. from the University of Iowa where she met her future husband, Norbert. When Norbert joined the faculty at the University of Detroit, he and Martha made Detroit their home and raised four children there. In 1976, Martha received her Masters of Library Science from the University of Michigan and worked as a reference librarian for the Detroit Public Library. She and Norbert eventually retired to Bloomington, Indiana where they spent 20 happy years together. They enjoyed living in a college town, were active in their church (St. Charles), and volunteered at the Monroe County History Center, Community Kitchen, and local Amnesty International chapter. Martha was a wonderful mother and was particularly devoted to caring for her disabled adult son, Chris. She was also an avid reader, bird lover, San Francisco Giants fan, and champion of liberal causes. She loved to laugh and most of all loved being with her family. She is deeply missed and will forever be in our hearts. The family wishes to thank the wonderful nursing staff at Jones Harrison for taking such good care of Martha these last four years, as well as Fairview Geriatric Services Nurse Practitioner Kathy Beckman, and the Fairview Hospice team. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, May 27, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Albert the Great Catholic Church, 2836 33rd Avenue South, Minneapolis, with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m. Private interment at Arlington National Cemetery.
