Maureen C. Flahaven

Flahaven, Maureen C. Age 71, of St. Paul, MN, passed away at home on March 2, 2015 from the effects of cancer. Preceded in death by parents James and Helen McKenna, survived by loving husband, Patrick; beloved son, Sean; grandsons, Will and Ciaran; siblings, Patrick (Linda), Eileen, Martin (Maria Fazzolari), Colleen (Michael Shaw), James (Donna) McKenna, and many devoted nieces and nephews. Maureen was born and raised in Washington, D.C., and lived for six years in Hawaii during her childhood. She worked as a legislative assistant for the late U.S Rep. Joseph Karth, where she met her husband. She married Pat in 1969 and moved to Minnesota. She was well-known for her 40+ years in public service and the DFL at the community, city, state, and national level. She served as a lay member of the Minnesota Board of Nursing, administrator of the Minnesota Governor's Residence for Rudy Perpich, executive director of Celebrate Minnesota, and the boards of the St. Paul Civic Center Authority and the Summit Hill Association. In addition, she did considerable service and charitable work at the Cathedral of St. Paul. Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt. She was kind, compassionate, and devoted to family and social justice. She was classy in every sense, with a keen eye for design and fashion and a talent for gourmet cooking. She will be deeply missed by many. Our thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff of the Mayo Clinic, especially Dr. Aminah Jatoi; Dr. Brad Benson of the University of Minnesota Physicians; and the nurses and staff of Sholom Johnson Hospice, especially Jan Ellwanger, Sara Litsheim, and Hannah Rangel. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, April 26, (TODAY), 1:00-4:00 PM (program at 2:30 PM) at the Prom Event Center, 484 Inwood Ave. N., Oakdale, MN. Memorials preferred to the Dorothy Day Center, serving the hungry and homeless, at 183 Old 6th St., St. Paul, MN 55102.
