Hazelle (Bjornson) Nyberg Hazelle (Bjornson) Nyberg

Nyberg, Hazelle Arlys (nee Bjornson) age 75, of Brooklyn Park, MN, passed away suddenly at home on Tuesday, March 3, 2015. While Hazelle had fought breast cancer courageously twice in the last seven years, she ultimately died peacefully of natural causes in her armchair with a partially read newspaper at her feet. Hazelle was born on September 28, 1939 in rural Menahga, MN to Julia and Nels Bjornson. The youngest of 6 children to be raised on the farmstead, she graduated as Valedictorian in 1957 from Frazee High School, and in 1961 from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN with a BA degree in German and education. While teaching German in Brainerd, MN, she met Jim Nyberg, and the two were married on January 18, 1964. Hazelle worked diligently for 25 years in the Osseo School District as the Assistant to the Superintendent and coordinated school board meetings and elections. After retirement, Hazelle was active in many groups, including MAEOP (MN Association of Educational Office Personnel), OARE (Osseo Area Retired Educators), MSOPA (Superintendent Assistants) and other church and support groups. She was also active in the League of Women Voters, OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute) and the TCACLA (Twin Cities Area Church Library Association), where she planned many conferences. The Nybergs lived briefly in Brooklyn Center and then in Brooklyn Park. They were members of Cross of Glory and Prince of Peace Lutheran Churches. Since the late 70's, Hazelle and Jim spent much of each summer at their cabin in Voyager Village, WI. Over the years, they enjoyed social events, golfing with friends, skiing, and volunteering at the annual arts and crafts fair. Hazelle enjoyed family trips, including California, Hawaii, Disney World, the Grand Canyon and Colorado. More recently Hazelle traveled to Germany in 2010 for the Passion Play in Oberammergau and took a grand trip with Steve and Wendy in September 2014, beginning in Venice, cruising the Mediterranean, and celebrating her 75th birthday in Zermatt, Switzerland at the foot of the Matterhorn. In January 2015, Hazelle spent a month in Naples, FL, enjoying warm weather and touring with her friend Carol and her sister Vee. Hazelle was an avid reader, participating in her church book club, and loved flowers, music, art, history, volunteering, and most importantly, her family, friends and her faith. Hazelle was deeply loved and will be greatly missed. A bright flame went out for all of us with her passing. Hazelle is survived by her son Greg (Meredith); son Steve (Wendy Porter); grandchildren Abigail and Matthew, and "grand-dog" Chester Bob; sisters Vee Bjornson and Carolyn Johnson; Jim's surviving siblings Dewey and Marie; in-laws; nieces and nephews, as well as a host of dear friends. Hazelle was preceded in death by her husband Jim in 2007, her parents, sister Myrtle Tangen, and brothers Norris and Roy. A funeral service will be held at 11am on Tuesday, March 10 at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 7217 West Broadway Brooklyn Park, MN, 55428. Visitation at the church at 10am. Private interment, Glen Haven Cemetery in Crystal, MN. If desired, memorials preferred to the general fund of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, or CEAP.
