Ann Cullen (Jewett) Smith

Smith, Ann Cullen (Jewett) Andy (Petie), age 106, died in Wayzata, MN on 1/25/2015 at the end of a long and adventurous life. She lived in her Minnetonka home for 78 years before moving to Hillcrest assisted living in 2014. She was predeceased by husbands William W. Cullen and G. Kendall Smith; step-son Peter Smith; grandson Blair Cassell; son-in-law George Cassell; and daughter-in-law Kathy Cullen. Survived by children Ann C. Cassell and William J. Cullen (Kate); step-children Nancy Elleby (Gordon), Ann Earley, and Shelley Orn (Floyd). She is also survived by six grandchildren, 9 great-grand children, 11 step-grandchildren, 18 step-great grandchildren and 7 step-great-great grandchildren. She was born in Hibbing, MN on July 4, 1908, grew up in Mpls., and was educated at Northrop Collegiate School, The Madiera School in Wash., DC, and The Erskine School in Boston. Andy was an active volunteer on the national board of The Family Service and Volunteer Service Bureau as well as the Visiting Nurses Assoc. Locally, she had a special interest in The Junior League, city affairs, and the natural environment. At age 104 she was instrumental in saving an important hummingbird habitat in Arizona from development, and her Minnetonka home and land will now become a nature preserve. She traveled from pole to pole in search of birds and new friends. She loved her family and many friends, including those at her beloved Encampment Forest. The family wishes to give special thanks to Fanny Budrey, Bette Fortman, and, especially to Andy's long time devoted friend and helper, Dick Kucera, for their many years of kindness Services will be in the spring.
