Robert Philip '(Bob)' Cooke

Cooke, Robert Philip (Bob) AIA of Chicago, Illinois, former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Perkins & Will, a global Architecture and design firm, died on December 2, 2014. Born November 24, 1936 in Glasgow, Montana to Mary E. O'Connell Cooke and Robert F. Cooke, Bob received his primary and secondary school education in Billings Montana, his Bachelors degree in Architecture in 1960 from the University of Minnesota and his Masters degree in Architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1962. In 1964 he was awarded Fulbright and Italian Government grants for post-graduate studies in urban design at the University of Florence. Prior to joining Perkins & Will, Bob held leadership and management positions with Wallace Floyd Associates (Cambridge, MA), and CRSS, Inc. (Houston, TX), one of the largest international design, construction and real-estate advisory firms in the U.S. Former colleagues recall several major projects completed under his direction and leadership, including: in Alaska: BP/Sohio operational facilities on the North Slope at Prudhoe Bay. Trinidad and Tobago: Santa Rosa Race Track. Saudi Arabia: King Saud University; the U.S. Embassy; Royal Saudi Air Force Peace Hawk, Peace Sun and Peace Shield Program Facilities; Umm Al Qura University; Saudi Ministry of Finance Headquarters. Yemen Arab Republic: U.S. Embassy Compound in Sana'a. Abu Dhabi: Ruwais Project, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company. Iraq: University of Bagdad. Egypt: Sheraton El Gezirah Hotel & Towers, Cairo. China: H.J. Heinz Co. food processing center, Guanghou. Macau: Hyatt Regency Hotel. Lebanon: Beirut International Terminal Complex. Chicago Area: International Terminal, Chicago O'Hare; Sears Headquarters, Hoffman Estates; Kraft Food Headquarters, Northfield. Bob retired in 1995 from a 40-year career devoted primarily to directing or managing the design and construction of projects in the Middle East, Asia and Europe. When asked the usual "And What do You do"? question at social affairs, he replied, "I'm a professional house Guest. I had the enviable pleasure of associating with a host of remarkable people during my career. Many of them are good friends, retired and living in areas well worth a visit. So, I visit-Italy, England, France, Hong Kong, Santa Fe" In 1996 Bob was honored by Sigma Chi fraternity with its Significant Sig award in recognition of his leadership, contributions, and achievements in his profession. Bob will be remembered as much for his gracious style, quick wit, and passion for international travel as he was for his professional achievements. He is survived by his sister Mary North Mulier and husband Peter of Stillwater, MN; nephews Joseph Robert "J.R." North and wife Toni of Athol, ID; Stephen C. North and wife Cyndy of Medina, MN, six grand nephews and nieces and a host of former colleagues and friends. Services in Chicago are pending.
