Kingsley H. Murphy, Jr.

Murphy, Kingsley H., Jr. Only child of Georgia Fullerton Murphy and Kingsley Hopkins Murphy, Sr. passed away at home surrounded by his family on November 19, 2014. Kingsley was born March 13, 1930; graduated from Blake school and Harvard University and received his Master's Degree in History from Columbia University. He was a minority shareholder and a long-time board member of the Cowles Media Company and the owner of Northland Stations which owned and operated several small radio stations. He was actively involved in Democratic politics both in Minnesota and nationally. Kingsley's political experience was highlighted by his work on Lyndon Johnson's 1964 and Hubert Humphrey's 1968 Presidential campaigns. He was an active member of the Minneapolis community, serving on many boards including St. John's University, Hill Museum & Manuscript Library, the Guthrie Theater, The Minneapolis Institute of Art, The Irish American Cultural Institute, The Metropolitan Council and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Kingsley kept his family and friends amused with his wry sense of humor and his contrarian views which always challenged our perceptions. He enjoyed fishing for Northern Pike in Minnesota and Canada, traveling abroad, learning to speak French and Spanish, eating good food and having cocktails with friends and family. His generous heart will be missed by many. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Katherine Barrett Murphy, his four children, Georgia Johnson (Bruce), Kingsley (Cynthia), Cecily Majerus (David) and Barrett (Lynn); seven adored grandchildren, Katherine Johnson, Evan Johnson, William Johnson, Kingsley Murphy, Alexander Murphy, Aidan Murphy, and Amelia Murphy. He was also the loving Padrino to Kingsley Calvo (Laura) and Cecilia Calvo. The family will always be grateful for all the many kindnesses of Kingsley's friends and caregivers during these last few years. We would like to especially thank Becky Henschen who made all our lives so much happier.
