Harper, Iva L. (Bill) age 95. Passed away Sept. 27, 2014. Survived by his wife of 72 years, Margaret (Peg), and by daughters Patrice, Meaghan (Les Gelhar); grand-daughters Heather Harper-Troje (Eric Turner), Devon Gelhar; great-grandchildren Liam, Aisleen, Riley Turner. Bill served in the military for 26 years and retired as a Lt. Colonel. He was a D-Day veteran. With the second wave at 7:30 a.m. on June 6, 1944, he stormed Omaha Beach with the 116th Inf. Bn., 29th Div. He was the Liaison Officer from the 111th FA BN., attached to the 116th. Bill was wounded during the landing. He was awarded the Bronze Star for re-crossing the beach to rescue a Naval officer. He fought With the 29th Div. for 11 months. He received another Bronze Star during the St. Lo campaign for heroic actions under extreme combat conditions. Bill served during the Korea War on the staff of Gen. Van Fleet and was awarded the Bronze Star. He also received a Purple Heart. Bill spent many years in the construction industry working on commercial projects, including the IDS Center and the Joe Louis Arena, Detroit. He and Peg spent a happy retirement that included travel, Elderhostels, and, for Bill, always golf. Mass of Christian Burial, 11 a.m., Saturday at St. Richard's Church, 7450 Penn Ave. So., Richfield.
