Mary Ann Honetschlager

Honetschlager, Mary Ann (Nichols) age 84, of Oak Park Heights (formerly of Marine on St. Croix), on Aug. 29. Born July 10, 1930 in Minnea-polis. Mary Ann met her husband Dean at Hamline University, from which she graduated in 1952. She and Dean were married for 63 years and lived their entire married life in the St. Croix Valley. She loved the St. Croix River. She received her MA from the U of M in 1969 and began teaching art at Stillwater Junior High School. Later she worked for the MN Dept. of Education where she was the state's art education advocate and helped start the Perpich Center for the Arts. She was an artist her entire life, and worked with clay, watercolors, and most extensively, pastels. Her family looked forward to seeing her sketches of flowers and travel journals. She was a great supporter of many local arts organizations. She and Dean traveled extensively, both on independent trips and on service and study trips with Earthwatch, the Sierra Club, and Elderhostel. Wherever they traveled, she sketched flowers and people. During her later years she and Dean spent winters in Green Valley, AZ, where they pursued birds, cactus in bloom and interesting hikes. She loved the North Shore, especially Grand Marias, and maintained a section of the Superior Hiking Trail with her family. The outdoors brought special joy to Mary Ann. She was an expert birder and wild flower identifier, and she loved canoeing, kayaking, hiking and camping. Besides her husband, Mary Ann is survived by daughters Beth (Don Greenebaum), Kim (Will Finch), and Martha (Dave Formella). Also survived by sister Janet Schroeder (Don); half brothers Chuck (Judy) and Jim Nichols; grandchildren Nathan and Mara Greenebaum, Jacob and Margaret Finch, and Rachel Formella; and many nieces. Mary Ann will be remembered as a creative artist, a wonderful flower gardener, an excellent cook, and the best possible life companion to Dean. She will be greatly missed.
