Terence Patrick Murphy

Murphy, Terence (Terry) Patrick age 78, of Minneapolis, passed away August 25, 2014, after a long illness. He is survived by Joan (Coco), his wife of 53 years; children, Kelly Whitaker (John) and Lynn Murphy Abbott: 3 grandchildren, Isaac and Dylan Whitaker and Grace Abbott. Terry was born in Sedalia, Missouri, March 3, 1936. His family moved to Topeka, Kansas where he attended school through the 9th grade. His family moved to Manhattan, Kansas and Terry started high school where his outgoing personality got him elected student body President which helped combat his grief after his father's death left him an orphan at the age of 16. He supported himself and always spoke fondly of the many generous people of Manhattan, Kansas who supported him and helped him by offering jobs throughout those years. Terry was awarded an Elks National Leadership scholarship upon high school graduation and he continued to support himself at Kansas State University where he joined the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and made life long friends. In 1958 Terry joined the U.S. Army and was assigned to duty on the Stars and Stripes Army newspaper in Korea. Returning to Lawrence, Kansas he married Joan Baldwin in 1961 and enrolled at Kansas University where he graduated with a Journalism degree in 1963. Terry loved the written word and he was a avid reader and writer. He had a 30 year newspaper career beginning with the Harris Newspaper chain in Kansas starting in their management training program at the Ottawa Herald and Chanute Tribune and in Iowa at the Burlington Hawkeye and Spencer Tribune. He then wrote and edited at the Akron Beacon Journal, Cincinnati Post and the Minneapolis Star Tribune. He also wrote a book, Classroom to Newsroom A Professional's Guide to Newspaper Writing and Reporting published by Harper and Roe. At the age of 55 Terry entered William Mitchell Law School graduated and established a private practice. After he retired, Terry and Coco traveled in the US, Europe, Australia and Hawaii. Terry was preceded in death by his parents James Charles Murphy and Georgia Hofmann Murphy and his three siblings Jim Murphy, Margaret Murphy and Mary Katherine Bird. A special thanks to the Sunrise of Edina 3rd floor Memory Care Managers who provided excellent care. A memorial service will be held September 3, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the Memorial Chapel in Lakewood Cemetery 3600 Hennepin Ave South in Minneapolis,MN.
