Pericles C. Caranicas

Caranicas, Pericles C. 78, of Minneapolis, passed away on August 19, 2014 - sixty years to the day after immigrating to the United States. Born in Volos, Greece, Perry grew up in Athens during the German occupation and came to the U.S. on a Fulbright scholarship. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees in civil engineering from the University of Minnesota and went on to work as a quality control consultant for General Mills, Heinz and many other companies. Perry played a significant role in state DFL politics. He attended his first precinct caucus in 1968, in south Minneapolis, to support the anti-war movement. In 1974, he served as a delegate from the 5th Congressional District to the Democratic National Party Issues Conference in Kansas City. He also attended the 1976 Democratic Convention in New York. Perry worked closely with Congressman Donald Fraser and was a national officer of Americans for Democratic Action. He became a master of the Walking sub-caucus, always pacing near the microphone with his worry beads. Survivors include Doris (Folkedal), his wife of 56 years; sons Andrew (Pamela Schmid) and Charles (Susan Kaplan); grandsons Samuel, Benjamin and Elias; and brother John (Krino). A memorial reception will be held this Saturday, 2-5, at Kafe 421, 421 14th Ave. SE, Minneapolis. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the National MS Society, Upper Midwest chapter.
