Born and raised in New York City, he grew up during the Depression, was a US Army Air Corps veteran, laid tracks for the NY Central railroad, drove a bus up and down Broadway and had a long career in the NY courts, first as a court officer and rising to Chief Clerk of the Family Courts in Queens and Brooklyn.
