McCourtney, Donald A. 1918-2017 At the age of 98 1/2 Don passed peacefully at his home in Rancho Mirage, CA on July 24. He was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Kathryn, son Patrick and granddaughter, Katy. Don is survived by children: Kathleen (John) Holt, Maureen (Gerry) Circele, Gerry (Karen McCourtney), Mary Ellen McCourtney (Jerry Ranfranz), Colleen McCourtney, daughter-in-law, Mary (Ed) Heilman and Sally Nordling, his dear companion for the last 9 years. Don is survived by 11 grandchildren: Tom (Jenny) Caron, Rick (Meashell) Caron, Pat (Cheryl) Caron, Mark (Ann Marie) McCourtney, Stephen McCourtney, Rochelle (Greg Gredvig), Troy (Trish) Hamlin, Trina Hamlin (Molly Schonthal), Julie (Stu) Nicholson, Brian VanGalder (Lisa Bunts) and Ryan McCourtney. Don is also survived by 18 great-grandchildren. Don spent his formative years in southwestern Minnesota, moving to Minneapolis as a young married man. He spent two years in the United States Navy as a machinist and saw action in the Pacific theater during WWII. After returning home, he worked as a toolmaker while he attended night school to become a design engineer. Upon completion, he worked as a designer and builder of intricate molds and dies. At age 40, Don started his own business, a one-man shop, which became McCourtney Plastics, Inc. Dedicated to his business, working long hours, the company grew and expanded. At the age of 70, he sold his multi-facility, 600 employee business and retired. Don started out in his career as a 'little guy' and he never forgot what that was like, with compassion he looked out for and helped numerous people along the way. He was an amazing person and a true gentleman, knowledgeable, interesting and forever curious. Don was truly a patriarch of his family and spending time with them was a highlight of his life. He and Kathryn spent their time equally between their homes in Bloomington, MN and Rancho Mirage, CA. They were passionate golfers and traveled extensively. A Celebration of Life will be held on August 17 from 5-8 pm at Washburn-McReavy Edina Chapel, W. 50th St. & Hwy. 100. Mass of Christian Burial on August 18 at 11 am., St. Edward Catholic Church, 9401 Nesbitt Ave S. Bloomington, lunch following service. Private interment Lakewood Cemetery.
