Debra M. 'Hortense' (Pohm) MacLeod

MacLeod, Debra M. "Hortense" (Pohm) age 62 died on February 25, 2017, six months after being diagnosed with a rare, aggressive form of ovarian cancer. Survived by her wife, Christine Broughten; her sons Azlan (Carrie) MacLeod, Buster Broughten, Louie Broughten; and her grandchildren, Olivia, Amele, and Austin. Also survived by her parents, Bernadene and Arthur Pohm, her brother David (Michelle) Pohm, and her sister Lori (Robert) Pohm-Thorsen. Hortense graduated from St Kate's Summa Cum Laude, then went to United Theological Seminary (UTS) and received an MDiv degree with a concentration in the arts. She worked at UTS in admissions and loved to hear stories about what brought people to seminary. She was an artist, mystic, and a fierce advocate for equality and justice. Through her unique way of seeing the world, Hortense's spirit made an impact that will be sadly missed, but will live on in the people she touched. On religion, Hortense said, "All is connected. We are all made of the same stardust. Therefore, the attempt to be pure pillars of belief or nonbelief isolated from that which we consider the belief of the 'other' is nearly impossible given the existential realities of the 21st century. . . There is birth, there is death. Empires, cultures, religions rise and fall. . . And yet, the human being yearns for that peace, that love, that 'ground of being,' that sacred hoop which is everlasting. We are beings that create stories to tell of that longing. Our stories may be different, yet the longing is the same." Hortense's memorial service will be held at United Theological Seminary in the Bigelow Chapel, 3000 Fifth Street NW, New Brighton, MN 55112, on Saturday March 4, 2017, at 5:00 PM. with a reception to follow. Memorial gifts can be sent to the Water Protectors Legal Collective or to fund research for her rare cancer at the GYN Carcarinosarcoma Fund gcsproject.org
