Neal John & Jeanne Marie McDonald

McDonald, Neal John & Jeanne Marie McDonald of Ft Myers, Florida, formerly of Edina, MN were happily married for 68 years. Jeanne passed away on May 3, 2016 and Neal followed 68 days later on July 9, 2016. Their children know they could not bear to be apart. Neal was born on 9/28/26 and Jeanne on 9/11/26. Neal always teased Jeanne that she was the older woman in his life-by 17 days! After graduating at 17 from Central High School in Duluth, Neal entered the Navy in 1944 and served until 1946 as a Radioman Petty Officer Second Class on the USS O'Neill (DE-188) in the Pacific arena. Neal asked Jeanne, a Saint Scholastica High School graduate, class valedictorian, and a St. Louis Federal Savings and Loan employee to wait for him. She did. Neal attended UMD and graduated with a degree in Business in just 3 years. These two High School sweethearts were married on April 3, 1948. When Neal graduated, they moved to Minneapolis where he started his 38 year career at Twin City Federal. Neal retired in 1984 as the President & Chief Executive Officer of Colonial Savings, a subsidiary of TCF, Houston Texas. He was active in Rotary, Toastmasters, Financial Managers, a founding member of Saint Richard's Church and many other organizations. After retirement, Jeanne and Neal couldn't wait to get out of the cold MN winters so off they went to Ft Myers to take up golf and world traveling. Besides being a mother of five children, Jeanne was a master bridge player, a superior baker, a talented seamstress, gave wonderful dinner parties, was a member of the Minneapolis Women's Club and one heckuva bowler. Dad always said she had the much bigger job raising the children. Neal and Jeanne requested their children gather together in Minnesota and have a "kanooper," a celebration in their honor- so that's what we are going to do with much love, laughter and many tears. They are greatly missed, but we know they had a wonderful life. They are survived by their 5 children, Jeffrey (Susan), Julie Porter (Robert), Gregory (Biljana), Timothy (Kim), and Kathleen Guidera (fiancé Tim Adelmann). They are also survived by 11 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Memorials may be sent to the Hope Hospice of Ft Myers, FL. A Memorial Service will be held at FORT SNELLING on FRIDAY, OCT. 7, 2016 at 12:30 PM.
