Irene D. Borden

Borden, Irene D. Copy writer, author of one of the most familiar jingles of early television advertising, passed away July 18 at the age of 91. After graduating from West High School in Minneapolis in 1943, she headed KROC Radio in Rochester, MN where she penned some of the most creative advertising on Minnesota airwaves. A pioneer of women in the advertising business, Ms. Borden joined the team of artists and writers at Dayton's department store in Minneapolis in the early 1950s. At a time when product producers retained the right to any ad content created by Dayton's copy writers, Irene's clever, poetic and catchy lines caught the eye of clients and spread nationwide. The memorable rhyming jingle "Use new White Rain shampoo tonight, and tomorrow your hair will be sunshine bright" was written by Ms. Borden. She drew accolades from national beauty companies for her ads for their lipsticks and other products. Notably, Ms. Borden was the creator of a slogan still familiar today, the dramatic "Raid Kills Bugs Dead". She loved her work at Dayton's for the creative space it afforded and the friendships she made, but also the warmth of the Dayton family. She fondly remembered that each evening the members of the family stopped by the offices to shake hands and say goodnight. In later years, she moved to the Minneapolis advertising agency Carmichael-Lynch. She also lent her skills to Echelon Publishing, a producer of fine art prints, for many years. Beginning in 1960, she worked at the aircraft products manufacturer Atkins Lights. Ms. Borden (née Norgren) was born in Minneapolis, MN on January 18, 1925 to Lillian Norgren (née Christensen) and Evert Norgren. Her paternal grandparents Oscar and Hannah Norgren were Swedish immigrants and throughout her life she remained especially proud of her Swedish heritage. She married Walter W. Casber of Minneapolis, and they had three children. Later in life, she married James Borden, a senior Northwest Airlines Captain. Sometime after they wed in 1985, they moved to Park Rapids, MN, Jim's hometown. The couple retired first to a home on Lake Moran in Menahga, MN, and then to a house they had built in the town of Park Rapids. Ms. Borden was a woman beloved by her children. They held her in the highest esteem as a remarkable mother and human being. Both her children and grandchildren were devoted to her and she to them. She made friends with everyone and was always warm and inclusive. She believed that laughter was restorative and collected silly jokes that she shared with her family and friends. Survivors include three children, daughter Sandra Wise (Bob) of Washington, DC, son Caz and daughter Tracy Moon (Kent) of Cottonwood Heights, UT; three grandchildren Kelly, Robert Wise of Philadelphia, PA, and Alexandra Wise of Washington, DC. Mr. Borden preceded her in death on June 30. Ms. Borden is also survived by Mr. Borden's five children by a previous marriage; Brian (Jaci) of Colorado Springs, CO, Lee (Melissa) of Scottsdale, AZ, Lynn Stein (Mike) of Minneapolis, MN, Kevin (Caroline) of Mount Pleasant, SC, Kelly (Heather) of Ridgecrest, CA, and grandchildren Holly, Shelly and Nicholas Stein, Meredith and Emma Borden, and Ethan and Sam Borden. Irene Borden's life will be celebrated at a private family ceremony. Condolences: ceasefuneralhome.com
