Joyce (Johnson) Dewey

Dewey, Joyce (Johnson) age 90, who was born above her family's creamery in Becker, passed away peacefully at her home in Roseville. She grew up on a farm in Ortonville, where she was a member of 4-H and won a blue ribbon at the State Fair for her sewing. She attended the U of MN, the first of her family to go to college. There she was active in the Clovia sorority and met her husband of 66 years. They were missionary teachers for the United Methodist Church in Rhodesia, Africa for 7 years. She later worked for St. Paul Public Schools, teaching English and Home Making Skills to adult learners in low-income neighborhoods and to refugees and immigrants in the Hmong community. She remained active in outreach for the UMC her entire life. Joyce is survived by her husband, Lloyd; children, Susan Dewey-Hammer, Bill Dewey and Frank Dewey; grandchildren, Marques Hammer, Heidi Yulico, Eryn, John and Will Dewey; and by 4 great-grandchildren. In a life dedicated to helping others, she touched the lives of more people than we will ever know and reminded us all to "Try new foods!" Fambai zvakanaka! (Shona for "Travel/Go Well") A funeral is to be held at Centennial United Methodist Church in Roseville on Friday, June 3rd. Visitation will begin at 10 am with a service to follow at 11 am. A meal will follow at the church.
